Treat Puffy Under Eye Circles with Lower Eyelid Surgery
The skin around the eyes is delicate and, as a result, is often the first to show signs of change and aging. This light and delicate skin can become loose and may begin to appear puffy, loose, or droopy. Eyelid surgery can smooth and tighten the skin around the eyes to restore a more youthful, refreshed, and restful appearance to patients. While eyelid surgery can address concerns of both the upper and lower eyelids, not all patients require a complete blepharoplasty procedure. Many patients have concerns that are limited to the lower eyelids and the skin right beneath the eyes. Plastic surgeon Craig A. Foster offers his Manhattan patients lower eyelid surgery for puffy under eyelids and dark, heavy bags beneath the eyes.
Eyelid surgery refers to two different procedures (upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery) that can either be performed together or separately. Upper eyelid surgery is often thought of as a treatment for heavy, hooded upper eyelids. Lower eyelid surgery does not address any concerns of the upper eyelids. Instead, lower eyelid surgery addresses imperfections of the lower eyelids. Good candidates for lower eyelid surgery include those with any of the following concerns:
- Puffy skin along the lower eyelids due to excess pockets of fat
- Heavy skin (or bags) beneath the lower eyelids
- Drooping lower eyelids
Lower Eyelid Surgery Technique
As with most plastic surgery procedures, lower eyelid surgery is customized to the unique needs of each of our patients. Lower eyelid surgery may involve removal of excess skin and fat tissue, redistribution of this skin and fat, and/or a reshaping of the underlying muscles and tendons beneath the eye. The amount of alteration that is required and the specific techniques used will depend entirely on the needs and desires of each patient. For instance, if a patient is primarily concerned with puffy under eyelids, and they display good skin elasticity, surgery may simply involve the removal of extra fat deposits, which will likely be taken through a small incision made either just below the lower lashes or just inside the lower eyelid. For more complex issues, such as significant under eye bags or sagging lower eyelids, manipulation of the facial muscles will likely be required. Overall, the goal of lower eyelid surgery is to smooth, refresh, and tighten the skin of the lower eyelids.
There are a great number of benefits to lower eyelid surgery. Dr. Mortensen can treat puffy lower eyelids for patients, giving them a more refreshed and well-rested appearance. This procedure can dramatically improve a patient’s appearance and erase years of aging while maintaining a patient’s natural aesthetics. Although the alterations made during lower eyelid surgery offer dramatic improvement, they result in a fairly short recovery, allowing most patients to resume their usual routines in as little as a week. Overall, lower eyelid surgery can safely and effectively address signs of aging and rejuvenate the lower eye area.
