Toning the Lower Stomach with a Mini Tummy Tuck
Ask any man and woman and most would agree that a flat stomach would greatly improve their looks and self-confidence. Many work hard controlling diet and exercise to achieve a tighter, trimmer midsection, but often to no avail. The lower tummy, in particular, seems resistant to even the most stringent workout routines. While a traditional tummy tuck can tighten the abdominal muscles and tone the skin of the midsection, this alteration is more aggressive than what is needed for patients who are simply concerned with that lower pooch of tummy. Instead, Dr. Craig Foster offers his Manhattan patients the mini tummy tuck technique, a procedure designed to tighten and tone just the lower stomach.
Candidates for a Mini Tummy Tuck
The mini tummy tuck procedure is one that allows Dr. Foster to target the lower section of the abdominal muscles. In general, this procedure is ideal for those patients whose main area of concern is the area below the belly button. These patients typically do not have a large amount of excess skin or fat on the mid or upper section of the tummy. Most often, candidates for a mini tummy tuck are in generally good shape, but have this problem area of the body that does not respond to diet or exercise. Women who have given birth are also often good candidates, as this surgery repairs muscles and skin elasticity that may have been lost during pregnancy. The mini tummy tuck procedure does require the use of general anesthesia, so it is also important that patients are in good health and able to undergo surgery without an increased risk of complications.
The mini tummy tuck uses a shorter incision than that used for a traditional tummy tuck. Much like the incision that is used for a caesarian section, the mini tummy tuck requires a short incision that sits just above the bikini line and can be easily hidden, even beneath a swimsuit. Through this incision, Dr. Foster can repair and tighten the abdominal muscles and remove excess skin. If necessary, liposuction can also be performed to remove fat deposits from the area before pulling the skin tight and closing the incision.
The tummy area will be wrapped with compression garments following surgery. These garments should continue to be used as directed, as they can reduce swelling and promote healing. Patients can expect recovery from a mini tummy tuck to be slightly shorter than recovery from a traditional tummy tuck. Within a week or two, most patients are able to return to a normal routine (with the exception of exercise). More strenuous activities can often be resumed between six and 12 weeks after surgery.
