What is a Facelift?

A facelift tightens facial muscles and skin using small incisions usually made along the hairline or behind the ears. Excess tissue is removed, and remaining tissue is pulled taught. Tissues beneath the skin are expertly repositioned, and fine sutures reconnect the skin at the hairline and behind the ears. The surgery ultimately removes wrinkles and hanging skin from the brow, forehead, cheeks, jowls, and neck. It gives patients a more youthful, wakeful appearance.

Patients are given general anesthesia during their facelift. After awaking following surgery, they will be given pain medication and will have their faces wrapped with special bandages to protect their incisions as they heal. Dr. Foster closely monitors each patient following surgery, which is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. Patients return home to rest for several days, during which they will meet with Dr. Foster for a follow-up appointment.

Patients will usually experience light bruising, swelling, tenderness, and discomfort in the days following surgery. In the weeks following surgery, these symptoms will subside and patients can return to normal activities.

Other Facelift Options

Patients who do not need a full facelift have additional options for achieving a rejuvenated facial appearance.

A lower facelift tightens the skin of the neck, jaw, and chin. A mid facelift tightens the skin around the eyes and cheeks. A mini facelift is an endoscopic, or minimally invasive, surgery that provides minimal tightening of facial skin in younger patients who do not require a full facelift.

These facelift options can be less costly than a traditional facelift, and will generally require less healing time because fewer facial tissues are treated during surgery.

What Can a Facelift Do for Me?

Rhytidectomy surgery can provide long-lasting results. Our facelift surgery patients report their faces have a reduced look of sagging, puffiness, wrinkling, and creasing in the cheeks, lower eyelids, jowls, chin, neck, and area around the mouth.

In addition to physical improvements, patients usually report increased confidence in their own appearance. Increased confidence can help patients feel better about themselves, benefitting their professional and personal lives.
