Breast Lift Techniques to Restore a Youthful Bust Line
Over time, most people expect to see subtle changes in the shape of the body and the firmness of the skin. However, certain situations can accelerate these changes, leaving some patients feeling as though their body changed almost overnight. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and significant weight loss can all have a dramatic effect on the body, and the breasts especially. A breast lift can restore breast shape and improve the position of the breasts to allow patients to, once again, enjoy a firm and youthful bust line. Because each patient’s needs and desires will be unique, Manhattan plastic surgeon Craig Foster offers breast lift techniques that allow him to tailor surgery to each patient’s specific requirements.
When we discuss breast lift techniques, we are primarily referring to the type of incision that will be used during surgery. The decision regarding which incision is best for each patient will be dependent on the degree of sagging that they are experiencing and whether any additional procedures (such as breast augmentation or breast reduction) will be performed in conjunction with the breast lift. Below are the three incisions that will be considered for a breast lift procedure:
- Periareolar incision: The periareolar technique, which is often referred to as the donut technique, is the least invasive incision option for a breast lift procedure. This technique involves a single, circular incision around the nipple areolar. This technique is best-suited for patients who only require a mild degree of lift and/or a repositioning or resizing of the nipple areolar.
- Vertical scar incision: Also known as the lollipop lift, this technique begins with the same incision as the periareolar lift, but adds an additional incision that runs vertically down the center of the breast. Dr. Foster will add this incision if patients have severe drooping and a significant amount of loose skin. As with the periolar technique, this incision also allows for the resizing and/or repositioning of the nipple.
- Anchor incision: The anchor lift begins with the incisions of the lollipop lift and adds a third incision that runs horizontally along the crease between the lower breast and chest wall. Although this is the most invasive breast lift technique, it is effective for patients who are experiencing a significant degree of drooping. The anchor incision gives maximum control to Dr. Foster and is ideal for patients who wish to restore fullness to the breasts with the placement of breast implants.
Dr. Foster will consider all of these breast lift techniques when consulting patients. Ultimately, he will recommend an incision that will restore breast shape, improve breast lift, and create a more youthful bust line, all while maintaining a natural look for his patients.
